Omarama is known the world over as a centre for gliding and soaring — a place pilots travel from across the globe to fly.
The meeting of the Southern Alps, the wide Mackenzie basins and the prevailing north-west winds produces the strong, reliable mountain wave and thermal lift that soaring pilots dream of. On the right day, gliders climb to remarkable heights along the ranges that frame the station.
Best of all, the airfield is a ten-minute walk from the homestead — so a day in the air, or simply watching the gliders work the ridges, is part of staying here.
Taking a flight
Trial and scenic flights are available through the operators based at the Omarama airfield, and the gliding season runs through the warmer months. Whether you'd like to go up yourself or just watch from the ground, Annabelle and Richard can point you in the right direction when you arrive.
