The Subtil family

A working family station

Three generations on the same High Country.

Home/About
Your hosts

Richard and Annabelle Subtil farm merino sheep and beef cattle on Omarama Station — and love sharing this iconic property with the guests who stay.

Omarama Station has been in the family for three generations, giving farmstay guests a genuine insight into the traditions of High Country farming life, alongside the warm hospitality of the Subtil family. It is, first and foremost, a real working property: 12,000 hectares of tussock, river flat and mountain, farmed the way this demanding country has always required.

Guests are welcome to share in that life as much or as little as they like — a pre-dinner drink and conversation by the fire, or a walk to a favourite vantage point.

Fine wool, raised on big country

The station runs merino sheep, prized for their fine wool, alongside beef cattle — stock well suited to the dry, open High Country and mustered across some of the most spectacular farmland in the South Island.

The rhythm of the seasons

Dogs, horses and the muster

Mustering, shearing, lambing and weaning set the rhythm of the year. It's a life built around dogs, horses and weather — and one our guests are warmly invited to glimpse first-hand.

Heritage

Built of stone, and of generations.

The homestead dates to the 1860s, and the little stone hut by the stream to 1863 — both standing testament to the settlers who first worked this land. The story of those buildings, and of three generations of family on the station, runs through everything you'll see here.
