Fly-fishing

Quality fish, uncrowded water — starting at the door.

From the doorstep

The fly-fishing in the Omarama area is renowned for its quality fish and uncrowded waterways — and from the Stone Hut, your expedition begins the moment you step outside.

The Omarama Stream runs right past the hut on the station property, so you can fish your way along the water from the door. Beyond it, an exceptional range of options lies within easy reach: spring-fed creeks, braided rivers, the Ahuriri, and the lakes and canals of the wider Mackenzie — all holding wild brown and rainbow trout.

For every kind of angler

Whether you're an experienced fly-fisher chasing sight-fished browns in gin-clear creeks, or new to the sport, there's water to suit.

  • Omarama Stream on the station — fish from the Stone Hut door
  • Spring creeks, rivers, lakes and canals within easy reach
  • Wild brown and rainbow trout in clear, uncrowded water
  • A current fishing licence is required

Or simply, the quiet

Not here to fish? The water rewards stillness just as much — read by the stream, watch the light change on the hills, and make the most of one of the sunniest corners of the country.
