World Class Gliding and Soaring in Omarama

The sunny climate, unique geography and thermal activity in the Omarama area have made it a Mecca for gliding and soaring. During the peak season from November to march, pilots from around the world converge on the small township to experience what are regarded as fantastic conditions.

The proximity to the Southern Alps gives pilots the opportunity to develop their mountain flying skills and there is a highly regarded gliding and soaring school based at the airfield. On one of the typically clear days, there is a visibility range sometimes in excess of 400kms with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and, rivers and lakes. Long range flights can take pilots up to 20, 000 feet flying as far as Mt Aspiring and over Lake Wanaka and north to Mt Cook.

Omarama airfield hosts world gliding championships

Since hosting the world gliding championships in 1995, Omarama has developed its airfield facilities and fleet of rental gliders enabling visiting pilots to experience a highly professional operation developing their skills under the tutelage of some the world’s most experienced pilots.

Flying experiences range from introductory two day courses to mountain soaring for more experienced pilots.  Qualifications, competition training and high level mountain flying courses are also available through the local gliding school.
